A scar is an area of fibrous tissue that replaces normal skin after an injury. Scars result from the biological process of wound repair in the skin, as well as in other organs and tissues of the body. Thus, scarring is a natural part of the healing process.

Scars form when the dermis (deep, thick layer of skin) is damaged. The body forms new collagen fibers (a naturally occurring protein in the body) to mend the damage, resulting in a scar. Most scars are flat and pale. However, in cases when the body produces too much collagen, scars can be raised.

Thankfully, there are several non-invasive and non-surgical scar removal treatment options to help reduce and remove scars from the body. Some of the more popular treatment options for scars are listed below.

  • Chemical peels:

There are various types of chemical peels that can help reduce the appearance of scars. A chemical peel involves the chemical exfoliation of the layer of damaged skin. The peel then reveals the healthier layer of skin underneath.

  • Vivace Microneedling:

This procedure involves the use of Vivace radio frequency microneedling to help brighten the skin and reduce and eliminate scars.

  • Microneedling:

Similar to Vivace, this technology helps in fighting the appearance of scars. In this technique, microneedles are used to help eliminate the skin imperfections such as scars by helping promote collagen production.

Injuries and accidents can happen with anyone and anytime. The scars they leave have a huge impact on your self confidence.

Here at Ellemes Medical Spa, Atlanta, we not only counsel our patients but also give them suitable options depending upon their condition. Contact us today and we can come up with a treatment plan based on your skin type and skin goals.

A list of additional frequently asked questions.

1. Will scars go away on their own?

Once there is a scar, it is forever unless treated. Generally, it will blend into the normal skin creases so that it is hardly noticeable. Most scars reach this point six months after surgery. It can take up to two years for some severe scars to fully develop.

2. Do scars eventually shed off with normal skin turnover?

Unfortunately, no. The normal shedding process of skin doesn’t affect scars because it only involves the migration of the epithelial cells from the base of the epithelium to the surface.

3. What are the different types of scars?

There are different treatment options depending on the type of scar tissue. The different types of scars include:

  • hypertrophic scars – red, raised scars that form along a wound and can remain this way for up to five years
  • keloid scars – caused by an excess of scar tissue produced at the site of the wound where the scar grows beyond the boundaries of the original wound, even after the wound has healed
  • pitted (atrophic or ‘ice-pick’) scars – with a sunken appearance
  • contracture scars – caused by the skin shrinking and tightening, usually after a burn, which can restrict movement

4. How to get rid of keratosis pilaris scars?

Treating KP with special care and using gentle skin-based products can decrease the risk of scarring. It is much easier to prevent scars from occurring than it is to remove them. However, several options are available if keratosis pilaris scar treatment is needed including chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, scar creams, and lotions to help reduce facial and body scars resulting from this condition.
