Acne scars are usually the result very deep acne lesions that can occur during acne breakouts. The skin attempts to repair these lesions by forming new collagen fibers, which aren’t as smooth and flawless as the original skin, causing acne scarring.

Discoloration on the skin usually takes 3-6 months for the marks to disappear; however, if this discoloration is a scar, you may have permanent skin damage that needs treatment in order to disappear. An acne scar changes the texture of the skin. If acne has left indentations, or raised spots, the damage has occurred at a deeper level in the skin.

The appearance of moderate to severe acne scars can benefit from the following procedures:

  • Microdermabrasion:

A microdermabrasion procedure applies tiny rough particles from a special machine to remove the uppermost layer of skin.

  • Chemical Peels:

A chemical peel is a skin treatment that removes the outer layer of old skin by using a special chemical solution. The new skin that replaces the old skin is usually smoother and less scarred.

The microneedling procedure is a skin treatment that uses small needles to create controlled microinjury to the skin. This helps to stimulate the body’s own collagen production and smooth acne scarring.

  • Vivace RF Microneedling:

This radio frequency microneedling treatment combines the benefits of microneedling with the additional benefit of radio frequency technology for outstanding results in fighting acne scars.

  • IPL:

This photofacial treatment uses an intense but gentle beam of light that treats the acne without damaging surrounding tissue. It generally works best when combined with other acne treatments.

  • Laser Skin Resurfacing:

This treatment uses a laser to remove the scarred upper layers of skin and encourage new healthy collagen to grow in its place.

Here at Ellemes Medical Spa, we not only educate our patients on what is right for them based on their skin type, but also give them suitable options depending upon their skin condition.

A list of additional frequently asked questions.

1. Why does picking cause acne scars?

When picking at your skin and pimples, you are damaging the outer layer of your skin which causes further dermal disruption. Although it may feel as if you are getting all of that unwanted pus out when you pop your pimples, unfortunately the opposite is true. When popping pimples by hand, you’re likely pushing 80% of the pus further back into your dermis, causing more skin irritation and deeper wound channels. You should always allow your spots to heal naturally to avoid any permanent damage or invest some time in heading to your local skincare clinic or esthetician to extract your spots safely and efficiently.

2. Are there different types of acne scars?

Yes, there are two main different types of acne scars and treatment options may vary depending on which type of scarring you are suffering with.

Hypertrophic or keloid scarring:

These scars are caused when the body produces too much collagen as acne wounds heal, resulting in a mass of raised tissue on the skin’s surface.

Atrophic or depressed scarring:

These scars develop when there is a loss of tissue. There are two common types of atrophic scarring. “Icepick” scars are usually small, yet obvious holes in the skin. “Boxcar” scars are depressed areas, usually round or oval in shape with steeply angled sides, similar to chickenpox scars.

3. What are some acne scar do's and don'ts?

Stay out of the sun. Overexposure to the sun can darken scars and make them look more prominent.

  • Irritate inflamed skin. Overwashing or scrubbing scarred areas can further reduce skin elasticity and heighten the appearance of the scar.
  • Pick at scars. Bacteria from unwashed fingers and nails increase the risk of additional cysts forming, leading to the development of a larger scar.
  • Give up on acne scars. New techniques – some non-surgical – can dramatically improve both the depth and appearance of acne scars.

4. What are the best acne scar treatments for darker or black skin?

Not every treatment is safe for darker skin types, as some acne treatments may cause hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones. In addition to a proper skincare routine, acne scar treatment options that work best for black skin include regular chemical peelsmicroneedling, and Vivace.
